AI in Histotechnology: Introduction

A plain explanation of what artificial intelligence is, and where it already sits in the histology laboratory.

A glowing paraffin block containing tissue sits on a dark platform beneath a transit line marked E, M and R, with a blurred train passing at right.

Two Stations Ahead

Embedding is the only bench station where an irreversible spatial commitment gets made on behalf of two people who are not in the room, about a surface that does not yet exist.

A chimpanzee in a lab coat and safety goggles operates a microtome at a histology bench, a lit cigarette in its mouth, slide trays stacked beside it.

So Easy a Monkey Could Do It

They say a monkey could do this job. I would like to introduce myself.

Microtome Mentalist

What happens at the wheel is a small piece of theater that nobody announces.

Protocol Transfer Is Not Copy and Paste

An IHC or histology protocol is the output of an entire laboratory environment, and when it travels, every hidden condition that shaped it stays behind unless someone deliberately carries it along.

The Wheel That Slices Gold

The Wheel That Slices Gold

Oh, the wheel, how it turns! Round and round in the gold, with a block in its jaws and a secret to hold.

Diagnostic Staining and Biomarker Staining Are Not the Same Task

IHC tends to get discussed as one craft, measured against one idea of a good slide, even on benches that handle both kinds of work and feel the difference daily. The stain is not the deliverable. The answer is.

Glowing translucent amber cube on dark background, brown fragment at its core, thin sheets fanning left and wispy ribbons streaming toward ghostly human profiles

The Last Section: Tissue Stewardship and the Hidden Cost of Block Exhaustion

Block exhaustion is where decisions made long before the microtome, and long after the first slide is read, finally come due. The histotech just happens to be standing at the blade when the bill arrives.

The Hidden Judgement Work of Histotechs

A finished slide can make histotechnology look deceptively straightforward.

The Role of Histotechnology Across Drug Development

A Sampling of Stains and Techniques in Pharma Histotechnology

This is not a stain manual. It explains context. Each entry answers: * What the stain traditionally does * Why it appears in drug development * Why it may be run at scale * What question it is actually answering * What outsiders often misunderstand In pharma, stains are rarely ordered casually. They are ordered

The Histotech Stack in Drug Development

Most people think histology is a technique. In drug development, it is infrastructure. In software engineering, a tech stack describes the layered technologies required to run a system. Databases, frameworks, servers. Each layer depends on the others. Drug development works the same way. Across oncology, toxicology, immunology, neuroscience, infectious disease,
